School History

A Proud History, A Bright Future

For more than fifty years, Mandeville Primary School has been at the heart of the Sawbridgeworth community. Thousands of children have begun their educational journey here, creating memories, building friendships and developing the confidence and skills that have prepared them for life beyond primary school.

Although our buildings have grown and changed over the years, our commitment has remained the same: providing an ambitious, inclusive and caring education where every child is encouraged to flourish.

Timeline

1970 – Mandeville Opens

Mandeville Primary School was opened on 9th September 1970. It was named after Geoffrey de Mandeville, Earl of Essex, Companion of the Conqueror, whose heirs held the manor of Saxbrixteworde in Norman times.

1993 – Nursery Opens
A Nursery class opened in April 1993, providing Early Years Education for 30 children. This Nursery expanded opportunities for local families and strengthened Early Years provision.

2011 – Mandevilla Opens
In July 2011, a new building was opened which is used for group learning activities, music tuition and Breakfast Club and after school provision. The children named the building Mandevilla and is a wonderful new resource for the whole school community.

2014 – Growing Together

In September 2014, Mandeville welcomed an additional Reception cohort to the school. In order to accomodate 30 extra pupils, a new modular classroom (The Lodge) was installed and one of the courtyard areas was transformed into a dining/learning space (The Quad). The Early Years outside area was also redeveloped to create improved learning areas for our younger children.

2023–24 – Becoming a Two-Form Entry School

Due to the new houses being build in Sawbridgeworth, the school has recently undergone an expansion programme, which will result in Mandeville Primary eventually becoming a two-form entry school. We welcomed two Reception classes in September 2023 and will be doing so every year moving forward. As a result, the school now has a brand new building and many areas within the school have been enhanced, including the Early Years outside area, lobby, office areas, dining areas, staffroom and all outside spaces. We are delighted that more local families can benefit from a Mandeville education while maintaining the school's inclusive ethos.

Further details can be found under the 'Expansion' tab.

Looking to the Future

Today, Mandeville continues to build on more than five decades of educational excellence. Whilst the school has evolved, our mission remains unchanged: to nurture kind, confident and ambitious learners through our commitment to Respect for All, Learners for Life.

We are proud of our history, excited about our future and committed to ensuring that every child who joins our school .

As we continue to grow and develop, we remain proud of our heritage and committed to ensuring that every child who joins Mandeville becomes part of our story and creates their own happy memories at Mandeville.
