What is the intent of French at Mandeville Primary School?
Children will be able to ask questions and respond to form short conversations. They will be able to write varying lengths of sentences using a variety of grammatical structures they have learnt. Our intent is that as our pupils move through Key Stage Two, our curriculum enables them to learn and recall simple phrases from memory, form conversations, translate written texts and build up to write complex sentences using verb forms as well as masculine and feminine vocabulary accurately. They will be given the tools to encourage and develop their independence with translating and applying new vocabulary within their spoken and written language. As they progress through Upper Key Stage 2, children will then be taught more complex grammar and verb structures and will be exposed to more complex reading materials. This is to ensure they will be well prepared for MFL at Key Stage 3.
How is French organised at Mandeville Primary School?
Teaching follows the 'Language Angels' scheme which was chosen to support teachers with delivering French lessons. This scheme ensures our children are accessing rich and accurate vocabulary; are exposed to quality language with precise pronunciation modelled as well as content which will stretch and challenge them in reading, writing and spoken language. Language Angels provides comprehensive lesson plans and interactive activities for our pupils. It encourages and promotes the value of speaking and listening tasks alongside reading and writing. Phonics lessons are also interwoven in to the units to support children with pronunciation and spelling. Mandeville French lessons cover reading, writing (and within this, grammar) and speaking and listening. There are two topics per term, so children will cover six topics every school year. Language Angels supports children in building their vocabulary as well as providing children with opportunities to practise their speaking and pronunciation.
