What is the intent of History at Mandeville Primary School?
At Mandeville, we are passionate that children develop a life-long love of History. We aim to support the children as they develop their curiosity of the past, and ask critical questions that enable them to have a better understanding of the people, places, chronology and events that have shaped the world which they live in.
How is History organised at Mandeville Primary School?
Children begin their History learning at Mandeville within the EYFS and the ‘Understanding of the World” learning goal. During this phase, our children begin to explore the idea of the past and the passing of time through stories, small world play and photographs. They are gently introduced to historical themes and concepts such as change and chronology through sharing about changes and key experiences within their own life, creating simple family trees, and using vocabulary such as ‘old’ and ‘new’.
In Key Stage 1 and 2, History is taught following the ‘Kapow!’ scheme of work. Following the scheme, previous skills and knowledge are returned to and built upon in a range of different historical periods and contexts, as children seek to answer an enquiry-based question during the study of local, British and world history.
Children in Key Stage 1 will begin to investigate chronology by devising simple timelines for people and events from within their own lives, within living memory and beyond living memory. They will be supported in their use of different sources to explore similarities and differences by comparing schools, castles, and monarchs over time.
In Key Stage 2, children continue to secure their understanding of key historical skills and concepts including chronology, change and continuity through the study of different times periods including pre-history and the ancient worlds. Children will have varied opportunities to observe historical sources and learn how historians analyse the past and make judgements.
Throughout their time in Mandeville, children will also participate in local celebrations of History, including through memorials, ceremonies and visits.
